in Power Plant Technology
Earning an Associate in Applied Science in Power Plant Technology allows graduates to start a career in the electrical power generation industry. Our program is leading the way in training the next generation of power plant operators. The main focus of our program is clean burning natural gas, combined cycle plant operations.
Students in the Power Plant Technology program utilize and train on cutting-edge technology and equipment for hands-on training. Paid internships, a requirement for this program, ensure students learn and gain real-world experience before they graduate.
Students explore all aspects of a power plant, from water chemistry to electrical distribution. Having 10 power plants within a one-hour drive of the OSUIT campus, site visits are part of the curriculum. Students have a chance to tour multiple plants, speak with operators as well as invite guest speakers from those plants to campus.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, power plant operators control, operate and maintain machinery to generate electricity. They use control boards to distribute power among generators and regulate the output from several generators. They monitor instruments to maintain voltage and electricity flows from the plant to meet consumer demand for electricity, which fluctuates throughout the day. The median annual wage for power plant operators, distributors, and dispatchers was $68,230 in May 2012. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $44,110 and the top 10 percent earned more than $92,570.
