Severe Weather Safety
Stay Safe, Stay Informed
Oklahoma State University Institute of Technology (OSUIT) prioritizes the safety and well-being of our students, staff, and visitors. Severe weather can strike at any time, especially in Oklahoma, where tornadoes, flooding, and winter storms are common. Understanding how to prepare and respond to these conditions is crucial. Below are essential safety tips for these specific weather events in our region.
Tornadoes
Before a Tornado:
- Stay Informed: Keep an eye on weather alerts through local news, weather apps, or a NOAA Weather Radio.
- Plan Ahead: Know your safest location, typically a basement or an interior room on the lowest floor, away from windows.
- Emergency Kit: Have an emergency kit with essentials like water, non-perishable food, flashlights, batteries, and a first-aid kit.
During a Tornado:
- Seek Shelter: Move to your predetermined safe location immediately. If you are outside, seek a low-lying area.
- Stay Low: Get under sturdy furniture and protect your head and neck.
- Monitor Alerts: Keep updated with weather alerts and instructions from authorities.
Flash Flooding
Before a Flood:
- Know the Risk: Be aware of flood-prone areas around campus and avoid them during heavy rains.
- Have a Plan: Know the safest route to higher ground and have an emergency bag ready.
During a Flood:
- Avoid Water: Never walk or drive through flooded areas. Just six inches of moving water can knock you down, and a foot can sweep your vehicle away.
- Seek Higher Ground: Move immediately to higher ground if there is a flood warning or if flooding is imminent.
- Stay Informed: Keep updated with weather reports and heed instructions from local authorities.
Winter Storms and Extreme Cold
Before a Winter Storm:
- Stock Up: Ensure you have enough food, water, and warm clothing. Check your vehicle for a winter emergency kit.
- Prepare Your Home: Insulate windows and doors to retain heat. Have backup heating options if necessary.
During a Winter Storm:
- Stay Indoors: Limit travel and stay inside as much as possible.
- Stay Warm: Dress in layers and avoid overexertion. Use blankets and heaters safely.
- Monitor Weather Conditions: Stay informed about the storm’s progress and any new warnings.
