CareerTech Credential-to-Credit Pathway

OSUIT has partnered with the Oklahoma Department of Career and Technology Education to create a direct, formula-based pathway for CareerTech completers to earn college credit toward the Associate of Applied Science (AAS) in Applied Technology. If you completed a CareerTech Core Framework Program and hold a current, valid industry-recognized credential from OSUIT’s approved credential inventory, you may be eligible to receive substantial block credit toward your degree.

How Credit Is Calculated

Total Documented CareerTech Program Hours ÷ 40 = Semester Credit Hours Awarded

Example:  A student who completes a 960-hour CareerTech program and holds the associated industry credential receives 24 block credit hours toward the AAS in Applied Technology.

Credit Limits and Transcript Treatment

  • Block credit is capped at 42 credit hours per student through this pathway.
  • A student’s combined total of prior learning assessment (PLA) and transfer credit may not exceed 45 credit hours (75% of the 60-credit-hour degree).
  • Block credit is recorded on the OSUIT transcript with a GPA-neutral grade and identified by source.
  • Block credit does not apply toward campus residency hour requirements.
  • Credit will not be posted to a student’s record until a minimum of 6 credit hours at OSUIT have been completed.

How Credit Appears on Your Transcript

Block credit is assigned one of four prefixes based on the occupational area of the CareerTech program completed:

  • BDPL: Business and Digital Technologies
  • HHPL: Health and Human Services
  • INPL: Industrial Technologies
  • TTPL: Transportation Technologies

Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for block credit through this pathway, a student must:

  1. Have completed an Oklahoma CareerTech Core Framework Program in an occupational area aligned with the credential.
  2. Hold a current, valid industry-recognized credential from OSUIT’s approved credential inventory.
  3. Be admitted to OSUIT and have declared the AAS in Applied Technology as the degree program.

Find Your Credential

OSUIT maintains an approved inventory of more than 180 industry-recognized credentials eligible for this pathway, spanning health careers, construction, welding, automotive, information technology, culinary arts, and more. Use the credential lookup to find your certification and see how many transfer credits it carries.

Next Steps

  1. Request an official CareerTech transcript of program hours from the technology center attended.
  2. Gather current documentation of the relevant industry credential.
  3. Apply for admission to OSUIT and declare the AAS in Applied Technology as the degree program.
  4. Schedule an advising appointment with the Office of Academic Affairs to confirm the credit award and receive a personalized degree map.

Technical Course Articulation Matrix

Students who have completed OSRHE-approved CareerTech coursework may also transfer technical credit to OSUIT through the statewide Technical Course Articulation Matrix—even when that coursework has not resulted in an industry-recognized credential. Credit awarded through this pathway is applied to existing OSUIT courses with a GPA-neutral grade of “P.” Contact the Office of Academic Affairs for more information.

Military Service Credit

OSUIT recognizes the college-level knowledge and skills earned through military service. Official military transcripts are evaluated for applicable credit toward your degree. Two transcript types are accepted:

  • Joint Services Transcript (JST)  — Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and Space Force
  • Community College of the Air Force (CCAF) transcript  — Air Force and Space Force

Credit awarded through military transcript evaluation is applied to existing OSUIT courses, assigned a GPA-neutral grade, and identified by source on the OSUIT transcript. The amount of credit awarded will vary based on the individual’s military training and experience.

Next Steps — Military Credit

  1. Request your official military transcript through JST Online or the CCAF.
  2. Contact the Office of Military & Veteran Services (918-293-4972) to discuss your military background and degree goals.
  3. Apply for admission to OSUIT and schedule an advising appointment.

Industry Experience & Challenge Exams

Work experience, corporate and technical training, independent study, and travel can all represent college-level learning. OSUIT evaluates these experiences through portfolio review and, in some cases, faculty-administered challenge exams.

Portfolio Review

Students with significant experience in a technical field may submit a portfolio documenting evidence of college-level learning for institutional review. The Office of Academic Affairs collaborates with faculty to evaluate portfolios and determine applicable credit. Credit awarded through portfolio review is applied to existing OSUIT courses, assigned a GPA-neutral grade of “CBE-P,” and identified by source on the transcript.

Challenge Exams

Students who believe they have already mastered the content of a specific OSUIT course may request a faculty-administered challenge exam. A passing score results in credit awarded for that course, assigned a GPA-neutral grade of “CBE-P.” Contact the Office of Academic Affairs to learn which challenge exams are currently available and to begin the request process.

Corporate and Technical Training

Formal training programs completed through an employer or industry organization may be evaluated for college credit. Contact the Office of Academic Affairs to discuss your specific training history and receive guidance on documentation requirements.

Next Steps — Industry Experience & Challenge Exams

  1. Contact the Office of Academic Affairs to discuss your educational and professional background and determine your eligibility for prior learning assessment. Credit through portfolio assessment and/or challenge examination is available only for approved courses.
  2. Gather documentation of your experience, training, or the specific course for which you are requesting a challenge exam.
  3. Apply for admission to OSUIT and schedule an advising appointment to begin the formal review process.
