In recognition of her outstanding contributions, Katie Quillin has been awarded the prestigious Governor's Commendation Award, honoring her commitment to mentoring, guiding, and advocating for her students, both in and out of the classroom.
Since 2018, Quillin has consistently gone above and beyond to assist her students on their educational journeys. As site coordinator and instructor for the MPower adult education program, Quillin's support ranges from advocating, teaching, mentoring and motivating her students to achieve their goals.
"Working alongside Katie is an absolute joy. She embodies the spirit of going the extra mile. Whether helping students navigate the enrollment process, assisting with coursework, or creating opportunities through internships and on-the-job training, Katie's commitment knows no bounds. Her genuine passion lies in being a fierce advocate for her students, breaking barriers between them and their dreams," said Fran Colombin, director of ABE and M-Power.
Through OSUIT's Workforce & Economic Development, M-Power is a program to enhance Oklahoma's workforce through customized training opportunities for TANF recipients. Single parents receiving TANF benefits can attend classes and improve their employability by completing certificate programs and college courses made available through grant funds.
"I was down and at a place where I didn't believe in myself. If it weren't for Katie and this program, I wouldn't be where I am today. This was my last stop. I had nothing to lose. I started here just needing one person to believe in me without judging my situation and not turn their back on me. Katie was that person. Now I am set to graduate with my Associate's Degree and a job waiting for me," shared Kiki Davis, a current MPower student.
Beyond Quillin's knowledge lies her unshakable positivity and compassion that allows her to see the potential of every individual she encounters. She aims to encourage her students to reach higher, to pursue certificates, licenses, and degrees that build their soft skills and resumes, and to prepare them for job interviews.
"I am shocked and honored to be recognized for the work I do in my classroom. I knew that Fran had nominated me when her words sounded through the speakers as they called my name. I enjoy making a large impact, not only making a difference in families now but forever," said Quillin.
