On August 22, OSU Institute of Technology proudly conferred degrees to nearly 400 students in its 228th graduating class. The milestone was marked by two ceremonies honoring the achievements of Oklahoma's future workforce.
This commencement showcases the impact of OSU Polytech, a statewide effort that blends academic study with practical, industry-focused training. By closely aligning its programs with the needs of the industry, OSU Polytech ensures that graduates are well-equipped to succeed and lead in their careers.
The ceremonies featured speeches by Williams President and CEO Alan Armstrong and Williams Vice President of Safety and Operational Discipline Amy Shank. Both speakers shared valuable insights drawn from their professional experiences, offering graduates helpful tips in leadership and teamwork as they begin this next chapter.
In his address, Armstrong emphasized the importance of strong partnerships between schools and industry leaders. He highlighted how OSUIT’s commitment to advancing technology and preparing workforce-ready graduates benefits both the community and local businesses.
“As the leader of a business headquartered in Tulsa, we’re fortunate to have this institution in our backyard, one that is committed to advancing technology and preparing workforce-ready graduates,” said Armstrong. “Williams is proud of our partnership with the [Oklahoma State University] Institute of Technology and we’ve welcomed many graduates as employees.”
He also spoke about the importance of aiming high and believing in oneself as key pathways to growth and success. He encouraged graduates to seize the opportunities before them and to trust in their own abilities.
"The world is full of opportunities, and it’s up to you to identify and act upon them," Armstrong advised. “Believe in yourself. You have the power to shape your destiny through hard work, determination and self-belief. Trust in your abilities, the firm foundation you have built here at OSUIT, and never let self-doubt hold you back.”
Shank shared her experiences as a woman engineer at the start of her career, offering valuable lessons to the audience. She highlighted the importance of challenging oneself and believing in one's potential, showcasing qualities essential to effective leadership.
“The best leaders have three things in common,” Shank explained. “First, they recognize the strength in surrounding themselves with people who are different from them. Second, they approach leadership from a place of service. And third, they ensure they leave the ladder down for others to help them succeed.”
She reassured graduates of their readiness for future challenges. “I know that OSUIT has prepared you well for what’s ahead,” she said. “I continue to be impressed with the thoughtful mix of theoretical and practical training you have received. The staff and faculty here have given you a gift: the tools and technical skills to succeed. But it is you who put in the hours and did the hard work, and no one can take that away from you now.”
The 228th commencement was a celebration of achievement, resilience, and the bright futures that lie ahead for OSUIT’s graduates. As they step into the professional world, they carry with them the wisdom imparted by Armstrong and Shank, ready to make their mark and lead with purpose.
