Writing Students Participate in Assessment Week Activity

OSUIT’s Assessment Committee continued the Annual Assessment Week this spring. The focus of this year’s Assessment Week was the university’s Core Outcome: Communication.

The task for the communication core outcome this spring was writing. Twenty-eight students enrolled in both composition and technical writing courses were asked to complete an essay in the Assessment Center. The Arts & Sciences Division’s writing faculty offered extra credit as incentive. The Assessment Committee provided additional incentive with prize drawings for participation. Prizes were donated by both the OSU Foundation and the Office of the Vice President of Academic Affairs, Dr. Greg Mosier.

Communications Instructor and Assessment Coordinator Dr. Melissa Dreyer, who coordinated the event with the Assessment Committee, said the activity would help provide additional insight into our student’s writing.

Dr. Dreyer also included that the Assessment Committee is extending the writing activity for 2013. The subsequent semesters, Summer 2013 and Fall 2013, will add valuable results with the additional students completing the assessment.
