I've been assaulted. What do I do?

You are not alone. Many people survive rape or sexual assault and cope with these experiences. You are in no way responsible for your sexual assault. A sexual assault can happen to anyone regardless of how they look or act.

I've been assaulted. What do I do?

Speak with a counselor. Sexual assault is a traumatic experience that can cause many emotional repercussions. No one should have to deal with that alone - what happened is NOT your fault.

Safety

Are you safe from your attacker? Do you need immediate help?

  • If you do not feel you are safe, call for police assistance:
    • OSUIT Campus Police: 918-293-5000 for on-campus incidents
    • For any off-campus incidents, call 911.
  • Rape Crisis Intervention Hotline (918-756-2549); available 24 hours through the Okmulgee County Family Resources Center. In the event of a sexual assault, a Rape Response Team is available to provide support during emergency room examinations of a battered woman or a rape victim.

Medical Attention

Immediate medical attention may be necessary to prevent the spread of sexually transmitted infection and possible pregnancy, as well as treat any wounds incurred.

  • Do not shower, bathe, douche, change or destroy clothes;
  • Do not eat, drink, smoke or chew gum;
  • Do not take any medications; do not remove sheets from bed; do not straighten room or place of the incident.
  • USE a brown paper bag (not plastic) to preserve evidence, (i.e., sheets).  Plastic may contaminate evidence. Although you may decide not to prosecute immediately after the incident, it is still necessary to preserve evidence so that the option will be available. The evidence collected can also be useful in the campus disciplinary process.

How to Seek Medical Assistance

  • For on-campus incidents, OSUIT Campus Police will provide transport to The Muscogee Creek Nation Medical Center Emergency Room Services (formerly Okmulgee Memorial Hospital), 1401 Morris Drive, Okmulgee, Oklahoma, 918-756–4233
  • For off-campus incidents call 911 for police transport, or have someone drive you immediately to the hospital emergency room.
  • If you choose to have a rape exam, there is a protocol to arrange for an examination by a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE).
  • The Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner will provide information about follow-up medical needs.  You will be encouraged to access any support services that you want/feel ready to utilize, such as counseling services.

Reporting

Reporting to the Police

Involving the police is not mandatory, but if you choose to do so the sooner the better so that substantial evidence can be obtained. It is strongly encouraged that you report the sexual misconduct to police. This does not commit you to prosecute, but will allow the gathering of information and evidence. The information and evidence maintain future options regarding criminal prosecution, university disciplinary actions and/or civil actions against the perpetrator. Your information can be helpful in supporting other reports and/or preventing further incidents (even anonymous reports can be useful).

  • If this situation happened on campus, it can be reported to the OSUIT Police (Residential Life building, campus; 918-293-4678).
  • If this situation happened elsewhere in Okmulgee, it can be reported to the Okmulgee Police (115 N Morton Ave, 918-758-1141).
  • If it happened anywhere else, it can be reported to the local law enforcement with jurisdiction in the location where it occurred.

Reporting to the Student Conduct Office

Reporting an incident to the police and filing a complaint with the Student Conduct Office are two separate actions. When you file a report with the police or with the Student Conduct Office you are not obligated to continue with legal proceedings or the SCO process. You may file a written complaint with the Student Conduct Office located in the Residential Life Office. If an individual is unsure of where to direct a complaint, contact the Student Conduct Office for advice at 918-293-5206.

Anyone can file complaints against OSUIT students alleging that a violation of OSUIT's Code of Conduct has occurred through the Student Conduct Office. Violations of OSUIT's Code of Conduct include sexual misconduct, sexual harassment, and stalking. When a violation of the Code of Conduct has occurred, the Code provides for sanctions up to and including suspension of students in cases where violations have occurred. Note that the code of Conduct requires that complaints be filed within 180 calendar days of the alleged violation. File an Incident Report Here

The Student Conduct Office can issue a "No Contact Order" between parties, which prohibits any contact between you and the accused for a specific period of time. Additionally, students are able to gain accommodations without filing a formal complaint.

Student Conduct can also assist students in making alterations to living arrangements, class schedules, on-campus work schedules, transportation, and other interim accommodations which are necessary to promote safety following an allegation of this nature.

In compliance with Title IX, the university must take immediate and appropriate steps to investigate any gender discrimination allegation, take prompt and effective action to stop the harassment, remedy the effects, and prevent the harassment from occurring again.
