Sexual Assault Awareness

At OSUIT, we are committed to the safety and well-being of our campus community. We educate students and staff on preventing sexual assaults and date rape through orientations, classes, and readily available resources.

 

The OSUIT Police Department offers sexual assault education programs to anyone on campus, ensuring access to vital information. Literature covering date rape, risk reduction, University response, and OSUIT’s official policies is available at the Residential Life and Student Conduct Offices.

 

Immediate Support for Victims

If you are a victim of sexual assault, your first priority is to find a safe space. Once safe, seek medical attention immediately. The OSUIT Police Department strongly encourages prompt reporting of sexual assaults to preserve crucial evidence. You can report the incident to an OSUIT Police officer or a Housing representative.

 

Reporting does not obligate you to prosecute but ensures you receive medical care and support.

 

What Happens When You Report

Filing a report with OSUIT Police will:

  • Provide free medical treatment and tests.
  • Enable evidence collection critical for prosecution.
  • Connect you with confidential counseling from trained professionals.

When an assault is reported, the Okmulgee County District Attorney’s Office, OSUIT’s Chief Conduct Officer, and, if applicable, Residential Life will be notified. You may choose to pursue the investigation through criminal justice, OSUIT Student Conduct, or both. University representatives will guide and support you through your decisions.

 

Counseling and Support Services

OSUIT offers various counseling options, including services from the Counseling Center and external support through the Okmulgee County Coordinated Community Response Team. For immediate assistance, contact 1-800-522-SAFE (7233).

 

University Disciplinary Proceedings

University disciplinary actions for sexual misconduct are outlined in the Student Rights and Responsibilities Governing Student Behavior. This includes the right for both the victim and the accused to have an advocate during hearings. Outcomes of hearings will be shared with both parties. A responsible finding may result in suspension for the first offense. Victims may also request changes to their academic or on-campus living situations for added security.
