Evacuation Procedures

Building Evacuation

In certain situations, such as a fire alarm or other emergencies, you may be required to evacuate the building. Follow these steps to ensure a safe and orderly evacuation:

  1. Stop Work Safely: Immediately and safely stop whatever you are doing.

  2. Stay Calm and Gather Belongings: Remain calm and orderly. Quickly gather essential personal belongings, such as keys, wallets, and phones.

  3. Secure the Area: Close doors and windows as you exit. Do not prop stairwell doors open, as this can compromise fire safety.

  4. Power Down Equipment: If time allows, turn off power to all electrical equipment to prevent potential hazards.

  5. Exit Safely: Walk quickly to the nearest safe exit, but do not run. Avoid using elevators during an evacuation, as they may become inoperative.

  6. Follow Instructions: Adhere to the directions given by OSUIT Police or other properly identified emergency personnel. They are trained to guide you to safety.

Elevator Entrapment

If you or someone else becomes trapped in an elevator:

  1. Contact OSUIT Police: Call the OSUIT Police at 918-293-5000 or use the emergency phone inside the elevator car to alert authorities.

  2. Provide Key Information: Relay the number of people trapped, their condition, the building name, and the floor where the elevator is stuck.

  3. Stay Calm: Encourage trapped passengers to remain calm and advise them not to attempt self-rescue. Elevators are designed with safety in mind and will protect passengers until help arrives.

Injury Reporting

For any life-threatening emergencies, immediately call Campus Police at 918-293-5000.

  1. Assess and Assist: Evaluate the situation to determine if medical assistance is needed. Provide first aid or assistance only within the scope of your training and certification.

  2. Address the Cause: If possible, address the cause of the injury without putting yourself or others at further risk.

  3. Report the Incident: Document the incident and your response within one (1) day by completing a Report of Incident/Violation form. Submit the form to the Chief Conduct Officer, Devin DeBock.

Ensuring prompt and proper response to injuries helps maintain a safe campus environment for everyone.

Evacuation of Persons with Limited Mobility/Special Needs

Ensuring your safety during emergencies requires thoughtful preparation and communication. If you have a disability or special needs, follow these guidelines to help facilitate a safe evacuation:

  1. Advance Preparation:

    • Inform your instructors and classmates about the type of assistance you may need during an emergency. Pre-planning is key to ensuring a smooth evacuation process.
  2. Fire Emergencies:

    • Immediate Evacuation: Aim for a complete and prompt evacuation if it can be done safely.
    • If Immediate Evacuation Isn't Possible: Seek help from someone to guide you to a safe area, such as an enclosed stairwell, until emergency personnel arrive. The person assisting you should stay with you, while another should notify emergency responders of your location and the assistance you require.
  3. Tornado Warnings:

    • Move quickly to the lowest floor of the building. If you need assistance, ask instructors or classmates for help.
    • Once on the lowest floor, stay in the corridors away from windows and exterior doors.
  4. Pre-Planning for Emergencies:

    • Understand Your Needs: Assess your specific needs and consider how you would handle an emergency.
    • Provide Information: Help rescuers by providing clear details about your needs and the best ways to assist you. Many people may not be familiar with your circumstances.
    • Contact Access Services: Register with Access Services at 918-293-4622 to ensure your needs are documented. Students in Residence Halls should also inform their hall staff.
